The Rural South Is the Center of Endemic Gun Violence

While most people think of gun violence as largely an urban phenomenon, in fact, it is rife in rural areas, particularly in the Deep South.

Note: Map shows U.S. counties or county equivalents with over 20 gun homicides from 2016–20. The CDC flags death rates based on counts of fewer than 20 as "unreliable." A death rate based on fewer than 20 deaths has a relative standard error of 23% or more, which is considered statistically unreliable. Counties are considered to be the "first-order subdivisions" of each state, regardless of their local designation (county, parish, borough, census area).
