'Cost-burdened' renters in U.S. and Virginia

More than half of the renters in the Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News metropolitan area last year spent 30% or more of their income on rent -- the U.S. Census Bureau's definition of being "cost burdened." That was higher than in most comparable metro areas in the U.S.; the highest of all large metro areas in Virginia; and higher than the state and national averages.
