The Most Dangerous States for Gig & Delivery Drivers, 2026

This map ranks all 50 states and D.C. based on where gig and delivery drivers face the highest overall roadway risk. The score factors in exposure from gig and delivery work, as well as fatalities related to speeding, urban roads, pedestrians, and pedalcyclists.

The index is based on five equally weighted factors, each contributing 20% to the total score. All measures were normalized to a 0–100 scale, with higher values indicating greater risk. Gig & delivery work exposure is derived from 2023 U.S. Census data on nonemployee establishments in Couriers and Messengers and Taxi and Limousine Service. Roadway risk is assessed using 2024 NHTSA FARS data. The index reflects the combined impact of gig/delivery exposure and roadway conditions and does not represent confirmed crashes involving app-based drivers or specific platforms such as Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, or Instacart.
