Death penalty status by state
Missouri lawmakers are currently revisiting House Bill 2153. This bill would abolish the death penalty and specifies that any person sentenced to death must be sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. If this bill makes it to the House floor and passes, Missouri will become the 24th state that has abolished the death penalty.

However, four states, California, Oregon, Ohio and Pennsylvania, have an active death penalty, but their status on pause and are not executing any inmates until further government action is discussed.
