Chronic health needs in state prisons fuel steep costs to Pennsylvania taxpayers

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections spent an average of $59,598 per person last year. But costs can top $100,000 at the two state prisons — Waymart and Laurel Highlands — that provide health care for people with chronic needs.
