New Jersey deaths outpace official coronavirus count

Overall deaths in March and April have skyrocketed this year compared to previous years. New Jersey attributed 7,535 deaths to COVID-19 in those months, but the excess death figures suggest that number could be understated by as much as a fifth.

Excess deaths compare March and April 2020 to the average deaths in those months in 2015 through 2019.
