How annual deforestation rates have changed

The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that about 420 million hectares of forest (about 1.6 million square miles) has been lost worldwide to deforestation since 1990. While rates are still high, the annual rate of deforestation fell over the past three decades.

Bars show decreasing forest lost, but also less reforestation since a high during the first decade of the 21st century.
