Laws criminalizing librarians over the books they provide to kids
More than a dozen states have introduced bills to allow prosecutors to charge public library staff members over children’s access to explicit material.
A map showing the states where librarians face prison or fines for providing 'harmful' books to children. The librarians are from only public and community libraries, excluding school librarians. The states that have passed the laws (Arkansas, Indiana, Montana and Oklahoma); and the states that have passed laws, but were vetoed (Idaho and North Dakota). The states where legislation was proposed but did not pass this year (Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Texas, South Carolina, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming). To note that, Oklahoma’s law passed in 2022; the others passed in 2023. These states have none of the above: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
