Pepper spray use in L.A. County Juvenile Halls

The Los Angeles County Probation Department has used pepper spray against juveniles in its custody 1,342 times since June 2021. This chart shows combined monthly use at Central, Barry J. Nidorf and Los Padrinos Juvenile Halls.

California closed Central and Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Halls in July 2023, forcing the relocation of the juveniles in both facilities to a newly reopened Los Padrinos. A Secure Youth Treatment Facility (SYTF) continues to operate on Barry J. Nidorf's campus.
