Where have all the construction workers gone?

Employment in construction work peaked in 2007 and never fully recovered from the financial crisis -- even though the U.S. population has grown by more than 40 million in that time.

A line chart shows the number of construction workers in the U.S. falling sharply from 6.7 million in 2007 to fewer than 5 million in 2011, before gradually rising to 6.1 million in 2022.
