Black vultures' population range

This map shows the range of black vultures across the U.S. as of 2023. According to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, black vultures are short-distance migrant birds, which means they make relatively small movements when migrating in the winter, staying close to favorable conditions.

The Black Vulture Livestock Protection pilot program refers to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service program that launched in 2021. It allows public entities (e.g. state farm bureaus) to apply for a statewide depredation permit through the USFWS. If the USFWS grants the permit, it then allows for the public entity to issue sub-permits to livestock producers that are experiencing black vulture depredation and have applied for the sub-permit.
