Distracted and Deadly: Ranking America's Most Dangerous States for Distracted Driving
Fatality rate reflects deaths per 100,000 residents in crashes classified as involving a distracted driver, as determined by the responding officer at the scene. Distraction-involved crashes are widely considered to be underreported in federal crash data, as distraction is largely observational and self-reported rather than objectively measured. Per capita rates were calculated using 2024 U.S. Census Bureau population estimates. Data represents all distracted driving-involved fatal motor vehicle crashes reported across the United States for the full calendar year 2024.
