Registered composters in Michigan reported receiving double the amount of food waste they did 5 years ago

A stacked line chart shows food composting utilization data for 15 composters going back to 2019. In 2019, composters reported 20,000 cubic yards of food waste received. The line has some dips in 2020 and 2023 with a stark increase from about 25,000 cubic yards in 2023 to nearly 45,000 a year later. A large driver of the increase was Holland Farms who saw a 5-fold increase in food waste received.
Several smaller composters were onboarded to the state's reporting system in 2024 due to Michigan's 2023 law requiring oversight for organics processors. They are only reflected in the 2024 data as the small band of thin slices toward the top, despite being operational for many years before. We believe their addition to the chart doesn't skew the picture. If removed, the total utilization still more than doubled since 2019.
