Where Doug Mastriano's donors live in the U.S.

Using the Campaign Finance forms submitted by each gubernatorial candidate in 2021 and 2022, Spotlight PA analyzed where donors resided across the state. In total, Sen. Mastriano-- the Republican Candidate-- had approximately 9,000 donors, most of whom reside within Pennsylvania.

Some people and organizations donated multiple times to the candidate. Spotlight PA cleaned the data to count each donor only once, though this may not account for spelling or other data entry errors.

To perform its analysis, Spotlight PA downloaded campaign finance data from the Pennsylvania Department of State website from January 2021 to Sept. 19, 2022, the most recent information filed by the campaigns. Using that information, Spotlight PA then calculated and mapped how many donors were located in different ZIP code.

The Department of State also separately publishes fundraising totals for candidates on its website. Spotlight PA compared those totals with the ones it produced using the downloaded data and identified a roughly $1.5 million difference.
