COVID-19 Daily Molecular Tests (2021-2022)

Data from the Texas Department of Health and Human Services shows the number of molecular tests performed daily in 2021 and 2022.

A molecular test, also called a PCR test, detects the genetic material of the virus and is considered to be very accurate. A vast majority of the COVID-19 tests performed are molecular tests. More than 14 million molecular tests were performed in 2020.

Due to the winter storm that began in Texas on Feb. 14, 2021 reporting data for that week was inconsistent, leading to a sharp rise in numbers when reporting resumed Feb. 21, 2021. Similarly, reporting was not done between Dec. 31, 2021 and Jan. 2, 2022, leaving a backlog spike on Jan. 3, 2022.
