Absenteeism and truancy remain near record highs

More than one-quarter of Illinois students were chronically absent last year, with almost one-quarter being chronically truant. While these rates are falling, they far surpass pre-pandemic baselines.

Chronic Absenteeism: Absent for 10 percent of school days. Chronic Truancy: Absent for 5 percent of school days without a valid reason. Note: Data collected in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years were "calculated with concerns" from ISBE due to complications arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.
