Acute trusts have mostly run deficits, peaking at –4.3% in 2015/16 before narrowing during the pandemic to small surpluses in 2020/21 and 2021/22. By contrast, other trusts maintained surpluses until 2022/23, turning slightly negative at –0.1% in 2023/24. Across all trusts, the sector moved from a –2.9% deficit in 2015/16 to a –1.0% deficit most recently.
