Coronavirus concentrations in NYC sewage since Aug. 2020

Since August 2020, New York City has sampled 14 wastewater treatment plants twice a week to test for the coronavirus in sewage. As this testing includes all New Yorkers – not just those who seek out PCR testing – experts consider it a more accurate reflection of disease spread, especially as testing became less popular in 2022. Wastewater values reflect SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus concentration, standardized by population of the 14 plants to provide a citywide trend. See MuckRock’s GitHub for more details.
