Legislators in 36 states are trying to address deed fraud
Fraud alert systems notify owners when any documents that impact the title of a property are recorded. These reforms can discourage misconduct but do little to help victims.
So far, 21 states have enacted deed fraud legislation. Fifteen states have proposed laws. Forty-eight states have a local or statewide property-alert system.
