Attrition

The attrition rate of the federal workforce outside the D.C. area was higher than the attrition rate for employees in the D.C. area.

Attrition is defined as the number of voluntary separations from federal civil service in fiscal 2023 as a share of the total employees onboard at the beginning of the fiscal year. Voluntary separations include only those who quit or retired from federal civil service.
