This chart shows the percentage of households that responded to the U.S. census without the intervention of a volunteer in 2010, for localities within the Historic Triangle and for the state of Virginia overall.
According to Census Bureau spokesperson Leslie R. Malone, the 2010 self-response rate was calculated by removing addresses "identified as undeliverable as addressed" - i.e., unable to receive mail, the way the 2010 census was mainly conducted - from the denominator. The percentage is an estimate of the number of occupied housing units that self-responded in 2010.
The methodology for calculating the self response rate changed for the 2020 census, which allowed people to self-respond by mail, by phone and online. The timeline for responses also changed between 2010 and 2020. As a result, the Census Bureau does not recommend directly comparing the self-response rates between the 2010 and 2020 surveys.
