Workers paid low wages are more likely to rent and be rent-burdened

The bars show the share of workers paid low wages (compared to all workers) who rent and who are rent-burdened (paying more than 30% of household income on rent).

The bar chart shows the share of low-wage workers and all-workers who rent and who are rent-burdened meaning they pay more than 30% of household income on rent. A larger share of low-wage workers rent (53.9%) compared to all workers (44.1%). An even larger share of low-wage workers are rent-burdened (60.0%) compared to all workers (44.3%).
In 2022, the value of the low-wage threshold is $19.69. The sample includes workers who live in California, were employed last week but not self-employed, ages 16+, with non-zero earnings last week, and who pay rent.
