NOTE: *denotes statistically significant differences at the 95% confidence level from non-Hispanic White beneficiaries. Persons of Hispanic origin may be of any race but are categorized as Hispanic for this analysis; other groups are non-Hispanic. ¹Sample includes all beneficiaries, including those who are enrolled for the entire year, those who become eligible during the year, and those who die during the year. ²Denotes difficulty performing activities of daily living, which are eating, dressing, getting into and out of bed or chair, taking a bath or shower, using the toilet, and walking. ³Denotes difficulty performing instrumental activities of daily living, which are using a telephone, shopping, managing money, stooping/kneeling, lifting heavy items, reaching/extending arms, writing/grasping, and walking. ⁴Cognitive/mental impairment is defined as presence of memory loss that interferes with daily activity, difficulty making decisions, trouble concentrating, and loss of interest within the past year. ⁵A person with a disability has at least one of the following conditions: is deaf or has serious difficulty hearing; is blind or has serious difficulty seeing even when wearing glasses; has serious difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions because of a physical, mental, or emotional condition; has serious difficulty walking or climbing stairs; has difficulty dressing or bathing; or has difficulty doing errands alone such as visiting a doctor's office or shopping because of a physical, mental, or emotional condition. ⁶Denotes that a beneficiary has a disability and has a little, some, or a lot of difficulty walking a quarter of a mile. ⁷Mental condition is defined as presence of a mental disorder (excluding depression), intellectual disability, schizophrenia, and/or manic depression.
