Less than half of National Association of Science Writers members consider themselves reporters

The science journalism and scicomm professional communities overlap substantially. 47.1% of NASW members listed in the public membership roster listed themselves as reporters.

Data current as of July 26, 2026. Data is from the publicly available "Find a Freelancer" membership roster which includes 1327 of the 2140 total NASW members. I have access to the more complete but private internal membership directory (1839 of 2140 total members); the headline finding is the same based on those numbers — in fact, the percentage of reporters is slightly lower.
