The authors asked how difficult it was to make a choice about how to react militarily to a downed American aircraft under various scenarios. Those told that no Americans had died in the attack found it easiest to make up their minds – only about a quarter found it moderately or strongly difficult to decide what to do. The decision was tougher when respondents had to weigh one or more American deaths against the possibility of 150 Iranian deaths.
