A recent report on California's exposure to volcanic hazards lists the Long Valley Caldera, just east of Fresno and Madera counties, as one of three "very high" volcanic threats in the state.
Threat rankings are based not only on the probability of an eruption, but also on potential effects of an eruption on surrounding populations and infrastructure.
