Port communities have high cancer risk from air pollution
Compared to the rest of the region, the Long Beach port area and Wilmington have a higher risk of contracting cancer from breathing air toxics. Diesel exhaust, which comes from trucks, ships and trains, is the largest contributor to risk.
Long Beach (Port and East Village) has 715 total risk, 481 diesel, 52 Benzene and 84 Arsenic. Los Angeles (Wilmington area) has 664 total risk, 442 diesel, 48 Benzene and 85 Arsenic. The South Coast Basin on average as 424 total risk, 306 diesel, 47 benzene and 3 arsenic.
