In 1996, with 10,540,678 registered voters in the state of Texas there were 5,611,644 votes cast -- a turnout of 53.24%.
Of those 5.6 million votes, 2,736,167 went to Republican Bob Dole while 2,459,683 went to Democrat Bill Clinton.
Independent Ross Perot received 378,537 votes, more than 20% of which was in North Texas; Libertarian Harry Browne received 20,256 votes; NLP John Hagelin received 4,422 votes and UST Howard Phillips received 7,472 votes.The remaining ballots went to two write-in candidates.
