Cigarette smoking has become less common since peaking at 45% in 1954. It dropped below a consistent 40% range for the first time in 1977 (38%) and dropped below 30% in 1989 (29%). From 1989 to 2012, it was at or above 20%, but in 2013, it dropped to 19% for the first time. Since then, the percentage who smoke has continued its descent, and since 2022, it has been near 10%.
