Percent of peace officers with mental health training in Bexar County

Map indicates the percent of peace officers employed at police departments, sheriff departments, fire departments and fire marshal's offices that have received mental health officer proficiency certification. Across the state, 9.1% of peace officers have this certification.

To qualify for mental health officer proficiency certification, officers must have two years of experience and complete additional training courses in first aid and mental health beyond the 40 hours of mental health training required for all officers.

Data does not include peace officers employed by other agencies such as park police or school district police. Agencies that cross county lines were included in the county that includes the majority of their jurisdiction. Because the jurisdiction of the Katy Police Department includes substantial area in three counties, it has been removed from this data. However, we note that including it would not substantially impact the calculated ratios. Data last updated July 2024.
