Regional Impacts of Staffing Shortages and Funding Withdrawal on Seniors Care Capacity

This chart compares total nursing vacancies, the value of withdrawn overtime and agency staffing funds, and the number of long-term care (LTC) and assisted living (AL) spaces at risk of closure across B.C.’s health authority regions. The data suggest that regions with higher nursing vacancies are more reliant on overtime and agency staffing—placing more care spaces at risk when this funding is withdrawn

Total nursing vacancies data are based on responses from 66 care communities (April 2025). Figures reflect full-time equivalent (FTE) vacancies for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Registered Nurses (RNs), and Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPNs). Data for funding withdrawn for agency and overtime costs and care spaces at risk of closure are based on responses from 109 care communities (September 2025). Figures represent both publicly subsidized long-term care and assisted living spaces.
