Measured diffusion rate vs. molecular weight (E. coli)

Each protein's diffusion rate was measured in cytoplasm using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. Size, charge, and many other factors influence a protein's diffusion rate.

Note: Each data point represents one protein expressed in the E. coli proteome. Each protein was tethered to a green fluorescent protein prior to measurement. Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy works by measuring slight fluctuations in fluorescence intensity and using the data to calculate molecular diffusion rates.
