For-Profits Handle the Majority of Inpatient Rehabilitation Cases

Hospital-based inpatient rehabilitation provides physical, occupational, or speech therapy to patients who suffered strokes, spinal cord injuries, major trauma from accidents, and other severe injuries. They treat more than 750,000 cases a year. Most for-profit care is provided in specialized hospitals while most nonprofit or government care is provided in units within general acute care hospitals. One company, Encompass Health, handles about a third of all cases.
