Racial disparities in pregnancy-related deaths at the state level are hard to measure

Pregnancy-related deaths include deaths during pregnancy and within one year of giving birth from conditions aggravated or caused by pregnancy. Low sample sizes means not every state collects this metric. Where available, this table lists pregnancy-related death rates for Black vs. white people by state. Some states do not have this data available by race but have other metrics for demonstrating disparities including maternal mortality rates (during pregnancy and within 42 days of birth) and pregnancy-associated death rates (all deaths during and within one year regardless of cause).
