Miles of stream per streamgage
Many states average more than 500 miles for each streamgage. That means many stretches of waterway lack monitoring equipment to trigger flood warnings. Averages over 100 miles, particularly in highly populated regions like the East Coast, mean large coverage gaps.
A map shows states in the West have the largest area of water not covered by streamgages. Alaska, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon and Alabama have the greatest gaps.
