See where your county stands on disasters and mitigation aid

Search for counties and county equivalents to see how often they’ve been hit by climate disasters — floods, hurricanes or wildfires — deemed “major” by the federal government from 1989 through 2017, and if they’ve received aid during that period to mitigate future disaster. This tracks the number of properties reported as purchased through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's flood buyouts and the agency’s reported spending on hazard mitigation.

Note: Disasters are tallied by calendar year and spending by fiscal year. This data is part of an investigative reporting collaboration led by the Center for Public Integrity, Type Investigations and Columbia Journalism Investigations, the investigative unit at Columbia Journalism School.
