Are states on track to meet the obligation deadline?

States received billions of dollars through ESSER III. This chart shows the total amount of funding states were awarded and the total funding planned. As far as the federal government is concerned, many states still did not have plans for their funds as of June 2024. Indiana's education department said in early September that school districts have obligated 100% of funds. That makes them eligible for a deadline extension.

Note. U.S. DOE data did not include a total planned amount for Alabama. The state's dashboard indicates schools spent $2.8 billion of the state's allocated $3.3 billion, or about 86 percent, of all school pandemic funding.
