The map shows the share of each state’s workforce employed in gold-collar occupations.*

* As used here, "workforce" refers to wage-and-salary jobs covered by U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics program. These exclude the self-employed and most farm workers, and they count jobs rather than individual people. Gold-collar occupations are those that typically require at least a bachelor's degree and whose national median annual wage exceeds the 90th-percentile. Gold-collar jobs can overlap with the blue-, white- and pink-collar categories and do not constitute a separate, mutually exclusive category.
