Habashī Elite and Deccan Administration

The presence of the Habashi-khana and the development of the Neher system reflect what Richard Eaton describes in A Social History of the Deccan, 1300–1761 as the unique cosmopolitanism of the region. The Bārgīr-girī tactics, specifically, redefined warfare in the Indian subcontinent; as noted by Stewart Gordon in The Marathas 1600–1818, Malik Ambar’s refinement of these mobile maneuvers laid the groundwork for future Maratha resistance against imperial expansion.
