Impact of COP26 Committments on Vietnam's Power Mix

While the October 2021 draft of Vietnam's Power Development Plan 8 indicated plans for approximately 40 GW of coal capacity by 2030, Vietnam committed at COP26 to cease permits for new coal plants. Currently only 30 GW of coal plants are operational or under construction. This means that the remaining 10 GW of coal mentioned in PDP8 will need to be replaced with alternative energy sources.
