Factors cited as a reason to remove child from home, 2012-2022

Of the 44,044 West Virginia kids who spent any time in the foster care system during this period, these are the documented removal reasons.

"Parent substance use" includes both alcohol and drug abuse. "Abuse" includes both physical and sexual abuse. Because children can be removed for more than one reason, when added, percentages will exceed 100%. Chart omits removal reasons that were cited in less than 1% of cases. Data is from federal fiscal years 2012-2021, which run from Oct. 1, 2012-Sept. 30, 2022.
