Districts are as of 31 March 2017. "Poorest" and "poor" collectively refer to those comprising the bottom 40% population of India based on their scores on the NFHS' "wealth index". This index is based on households' ownership of consumer goods, ranging from a television to a bicycle or car, and housing characteristics such as source of drinking water, toilet facilities, and flooring materials.
