Where Philly Medical Malpractice Cases Come From

The Inquirer looked at 657 medical malpractice complaints linked to cases filed in the city from Jan. 1, 2023, through April to see whether the medical care was delivered in Philadelphia or elsewhere. In 13 cases, the location could not be determined because the complaint was sealed or it did not make it clear where cause of action took place.

The Inquirer include in its tally complaints filed through Aug. 21 so long as they were associated initial filings, known as writs of summons that had been filed by April 30. Writs of summons typically do not have enough information to determine where the medical care was delivered.
