Washington's state prison population, 1974-2024

The state’s 1984 Sentencing Reform Act as well as other tough-on-crime policies led to significantly harsher and longer sentences and fewer opportunities for early release for incarcerated people. As a result, the state's prison population ballooned until about 2014, when the population began declining for several factors.
