State Regulation of Facial Recognition Technology

This map tracks statewide laws governing facial recognition technology (FRT). “Regulation” includes states with active, statewide FRT laws that apply to law enforcement or other broad public use. “Pending Regulation” includes states that currently have no statewide FRT law but do have bills under consideration or scheduled to take effect in the future. “No Regulation” includes states that do not have an active statewide FRT law or any pending statewide FRT legislation. Local restrictions or consumer privacy laws with statutes that label biometric data, such as FRT, as “sensitive” data are not treated as sufficient to be in the “Regulation” category in this map.
