People who died of unnatural causes in the custody of Houston area jails and exhibited mental health concerns, by year

Across the eight counties that make up the greater Houston area, 46 percent of the individuals who died of unnatural causes in the custody of county and municipal jails had exhibited mental health concerns that were documented by court, jail or law enforcement personnel.

*Unnatural causes include homicide, suicide, accidents and COVID-19. Deaths where the cause has yet to be determined are not included in this count.
