Georgia prison deaths, suspected homicides see early spike in 2024

The first quarter of 2024 has seen more suspected homicides* and deaths in Georgia's state prisons than in the first quarter of any recent year.

*GDC has not released suspected manner of death for March 2024. AJC used information from families and other sources to identify two March homicides, and one prisoner was executed. For 34 other prisoners who died in January and February, GDC had listed the manner of death as unknown and death certificate data is not yet available.
