In this chart, a battery-powered electric vehicle purchased in 2023 would cost $6,303 more than a comparable gas-powered vehicle. However, fuel and maintenance savings for the lifetime of the vehicle -- or 150,000 miles -- could add up to more than $10,000, making an EV investment positive. The study, conducted by the Air Pollution Control Division did not include state incentives that can make an EV more affordable.
