IRS Workforce: 2008 to 2018

Here are the annual workforce numbers for the IRS, with the estimates for full-time employees (FTEs) in tax enforcement distinguished. The annual tax gap from 2008 through 2010 (not pictured) was estimated to be $458 billion. The size of the IRS workforce peaked in 2010; it has since decreased overall while the tax gap has likely grown.

Numbers for FTEs are estimates, as not all IRS employees worked full-time in a given year.
