Municipal utilities and electric cooperatives reported more than 3.2 million residential electricity disconnections in 2024.

EIA’s new utility-level data shows total residential electric disconnections, along with each utility’s customer count. EPI calculated the annual disconnection rate by dividing the annual number of disconnections by the annual number of customers.

Data for this analysis was cleaned by the Energy Equity Project, which removed any utilities that seemingly under-reported their shutoffs or didn't have accurate customer counts.
